I found this mandarin style dress for $3.99 in the Halloween section and it was a perfect fit for this redheaded girl. I paired the dress with some Dr. Marten's to make the look a little more funky. Instead of normal shoelaces, I used yarn to add some color.

I found ten boxes of these two-sided mirrors on strings, originally from west elm, at savers thrift store on Geneva in Daly City. I wasn't sure what I'd do with them, but I had a feeling they would be fun in a shoot some day. The big mirror was acquired at the Alemeny Flea Market. I think it's from a Hyundai submarine.

This shoot was experimental to see what would happen when I worked with the mirrors. I found that he tiny square mirrors were reflecting things onto the black of the model's shirt and hair, which I liked. I also thought the mirrors looked interesting when they were out-of-focus.

A few years ago I found an entire tin of vintage buttons at the Goodwill for $3.49. I've been hanging on to those buttons, thinking they'd be good for a shoot at some point. Well, today I shot for a new clothing line called Nohi Kids, designed by Janel Jones of Abe Jones Designs. Using yarn, I made a necklace out of the buttons and Janel indulged me and let one of the models where my necklace. I don't think this will be the last time I use those buttons. What is it about old buttons that I love so much?

Just got this proof from JE Models and love how it turned-out! The shot that is featured on the front of the card as the headshot was one of those unplanned, last-minute shots. We'd forgotten to use the necklace I'd brought along as a possible accessory, so Jennifer threw on the poncho and necklace, sat right down on the curb, and we got this terrific headshot in less than five minutes.

It was a rainy and cold Sunday morning in San Francisco so we were limited to natural indoor light. Sara greeted me in her holiday dress and after a few smashed ornaments (they look just like balls) we moved on to the skin shot, followed by some fun on the piano and multiple attempts to snooker her into wearing a hood. At one point, when the rain let up, we opened the front door to let in some light. I stepped outside and had Sara at the bright yellow front door. I guess she thought I was leaving because she waved goodbye and closed the door! Really, though, she was a tremendously calm and focused toddler and was fascinated by the camera (thus all the looking-right-at-the-camera-in-a-serious-way-shots)! The pink hood ones are my favorites.

I decided to start taking tutoring sessions for photography. As a self-taught photographer, the learning process can be slow at times. I've got some technical issues I need to address, and have been feeling a bit stagnant due to these limitations. So, a friend hooked me up with J. Jones. We had our first session today and it was quite enlightening. Here are some pictures of him I took while we were exploring some different focusing options. The shots were taken indoors in fairly low light.

The San Francisco Organizing Project met on November 8th at the Jones Memorial Church to discuss healthcare, immigration, and education. Many city supervisor were present, as well as school groups, churches, and community leaders.

I was helping my son with a photo project and we were scrambling to get his shots before sunset. He was doing most of the photography, but I guess I took this one of him to check test the camera settings for him. Anyway, I stumbled across the shot today while working on something else and was kind of startled at how lovely the light is at sunset. I mean, everyone knows it's a great time to shoot but the focus of our shoot was on landscape/nature, so I'd overlooked this image previously.

Theo just turned 2 and is with Marla Dell Talent in San Francisco. He was a regular model for Macy's and has also worked for Leap Frog. I've photographed Theo twice now and both times he was so easy to work with, especially for his age. For our last shoot, we decided to work out of his home. I was immediately drawn to the funky door leading from the garden to the garage. Theo's dad said it was created by painters cleaning their brushes on the door!

I've been taking pictures of Mia since she was a toddler. It started with some simple headshots for Wilhelmina in NYC and blossomed into a friendship between her mother and me, Mia and my little boy, and lots of great photos!
Mia has been a busy model and can currently be seen online at Saks and The Children's Place. I took this shot of Mia (in the woods) when I visited Connecticut last summer. I'm hoping to be working with Mia again soon when I return to the East Coast this fall for a special project.
